Citrus College Provides Resources for a Diverse Student Body. Transitioning to college from high school, military service or the workforce can be an overwhelming undertaking, especially for first-generation college students pursuing higher education. Between meeting enrollment deadlines, becoming acquainted with a new campus and declaring a major, the excitement of this new venture can sometimes give way to anxiety and discouragement.

Serving over 2.3 million students, California Community Colleges experience large numbers of students who enter college with diverse needs that have the potential to impede academic progress and affect their overall success. As the Citrus Community College District Board of Trustees representative for Monrovia, Bradbury and portions of Duarte, I am pleased to say that Citrus College provides innovative ways to guide students from various backgrounds through the complexities of higher education.

For example, for first-time college students who assess at or below college level in English and/or math, Citrus College provided and implemented a ground-breaking program, “I Will Complete College,” to help students complete their academic goals. Early registrations in English and math classes, financial aid assistance, school supplies, sponsored events, coaching and follow-up services are key features of the program. Most importantly, the IWCC program supports students in managing their educational careers from the onset by demystifying the matriculation process and introducing them to a supportive and collaborative environment.

Current and former military members will be pleased to learn that Citrus College has been recognized as a Military Friendly® School for the seventh consecutive year due to the resources available at its Veterans Success Center. One of the biggest issues facing combat veterans is social isolation and difficulty adjusting to civilian life, including adjusting to college. With over 500 veterans on campus, the Veterans Success Center provides a relaxing place for them to meet, receive the latest veteran benefits information, coordinate with the Veterans Network, meet with veterans’ service organizations and more. Additional on-site resources include mental health management, academic counseling, financial aid assistance, computers and quiet study rooms.

Since students benefit from staying healthy, Citrus College’s Student Health Center supports the educational process by providing quality healthcare services and promoting positive health outcomes for students. When students are feeling sick, they can be seen at the center free of charge. The center also provides a variety of other services for free or at a greatly-reduced cost.

The aforementioned are just a few of the numerous support services Citrus College provides to its diverse student population. As the student body continues to change, new resources will be available to help them achieve their academic goals. Whether a student’s desire is to earn an associate degree, a certificate, or transfer to a four-year university or college, Citrus College recognizes that each avenue to success is as unique as the individual pursuing his or her specific goals.
