Young Kudos Students Excel in Speech Tournaments

The students at Kudos College of Youth Leadership, a school dedicated to teaching children as young as first grade through 12th grade skills in public speaking and debate, are off to a strong start for the beginning of the 2016-2017 season of speech and debate tournaments.
On Oct. 21, Kudos competed in the Jefferson Middle School Speech Tournament – the first of the season for the Southern California Junior Forensics League. Kudos student Sharon Liu placed first in the Impromptu category. Impromptu speech involves creating a fully formed speech based on a simple word, such as “creativity” or “kindness,” with very little prep time. Sharon excelled by giving intelligent examples and speaking eloquently.
Kudos students Selina Ho and Emma Sieh also placed high in the Storytelling category, winning first and fourth place respectively. Storytelling is a performance based category where students are to perform with emotion and expression; Selina and Emma showed their skills in these criteria with stories from Greek mythology, and succeeded in delighting their audiences with their clever performances.
On Oct. 22, Kudos students also competed in the La Reina High School Debate Tournament. In Policy debate, Matthew Zhang and George Zhang placed first, and Caleb Lee and Andrew Sinsioco placed second. George was the top speaker. In Public Forum debate, William Chang and Benny Tong finished in fourth place, and Emma Chen and Nanette Zhang finished in sixth place.
Kudos College of Youth Leadership, founded in 2009, strives to teach all students to become excellent public speakers and leaders of tomorrow. A Kudos student typically starts between third through fifth grade with the Communications Pro Level I class. In this course, students learn about a broad variety of speech and debate events. They can then progress to Level II classes, where they expand their skills and understanding of events, and learn more advanced forms of speech and debate. From there, students typically progress to Kudos’ Tournament Prep class, where students choose an event in which to compete and prepare throughout the year.
Under the guidance of knowledgeable coaches, Kudos students have gone on to earn top awards at speech and debate tournaments across the country. Kudos’ hard work has not gone unrecognized; for five years in a row, Kudos College of Youth Leadership has been awarded the School of Excellence in Debate from the National Middle School Speech and Debate League – a distinction that has only been achieved by one other school in the nation.
