Families, Community Invited to Learn about PUSD’s Preschool and Kindergarten Options

The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) invites families with young children to explore the district’s preschool and kindergarten options at the second annual Early Education Extravaganza on Wednesday, April 6, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Madison Elementary School. The Extravaganza will showcase transitional kindergarten, preschool, and kindergarten opportunities, and feature musical performances, student art displays, family reading and math activities, summer “kinder prep” resources, and much more.  Families can also register for kindergarten and learn how to get ready for the first day of school.

“The early years of a child’s education set the foundation for growth and progress,” said PUSD Superintendent Brian McDonald, Ed.D. “We invite families to come and discover the world of opportunities in PUSD schools.”

For children turning three by September 1, 2016, PUSD Early Childhood Education Programs offer high quality full and part day preschool during the school year. Families of all income levels can apply and those families eligible for state funding may receive services for free or for a low monthly fee. Before and after school care is also available for school age children at Jefferson and Longfellow Elementary. Please call (626) 396-5762, extension 10070, for more information.

PUSD offers transitional kindergarten, a two-year program for children with birthdays in the fall, at seven campuses in 2016-2017: Jefferson Elementary School, Longfellow Elementary School, Madison Elementary School, McKinley School, Norma Coombs Alternative Elementary School, Washington Elementary STEM Magnet School, and Willard Elementary School. Enrollment for transitional kindergarten also takes place at the school of residence.

To be eligible for kindergarten in the 2016-2017 academic year, children must be 5 years old by Sept. 1, 2016. Families can register for kindergarten by visiting the Early Education Extravaganza or their school of residence, which can be determined by visiting gopusd.com/locator. To register for kindergarten, families should provide the following: the child’s birth certificate; his or her most recent immunization record; two proofs of residency, in the form of a current gas, electric or water bill in the parent/ guardian’s name; and a rental or lease agreement with payment receipt, mortgage statement, or property tax bill.

There are also limited spaces available at some elementary schools across the district via the second round of PUSD’s Open Enrollment from April 4 to 8. Applications are accepted online at openenrollment.info.

Those with enrollment or registration questions should contact the PUSD Office of Enrollment, Permits and Student Records at (626) 396-3600, extension 88340. Street parking will be available.
