Room 13 Art Studios Hosted at Opus Bank
Students of Room 13 at Eliot Middle School (Altadena) and Room 13 at John Muir High School (Pasadena) will be showcasing works of art at Opus Bank’s new Pasadena location. The special reception takes place on Tuesday, November 13th, from 5:30 to 7:30pm. It will include opportunities for the public to purchase art in support of the Room 13 program in our public schools. There will be poetry, caricature artists, and a photo booth run by the students of the “Pix By Tweens” micro business of Room 13. Light refreshments will also be served. Opus Bank is located at 2 N. Lake Avenue in Pasadena (Colorado Blvd. & Lake Avenue).
Room 13 is a program of Light Bringer Project, a provider of unique arts and learning programs in Pasadena and greater Los Angeles.
Room 13 is an international network of student-driven creative studios which started in 1994. The first Room 13 was initiated by an 11-year old at Caol Primary School, in Scotland. The idea caught wind among children worldwide and the initiative spread throughout Europe, India, South Africa, Asia and other locations, to now include over 90 studios worldwide. It is based on four guiding pillars of learning: philosophical inquiry, creative expression, reciprocal learning and business enterprise. An Artist-In-Residence, selected by the students, helps to guide their arts practice and special projects. Students also select a management team and launch a micro business of their choosing to help sustain their studio.

In 2008, Light Bringer Project established the first Room 13 in North America, at James Foshay Learning Center in South Los Angeles. The following year the organization launched Room 13 at Eliot Middle School in Altadena. In the fall of 2010, and with the assistance of “Mustangs On The Move” Afterschool Program, LBP opened Room 13 at John Muir High School. This is the first high school model in America. In summer of 2011, Tom Coston, President of Light Bringer Project was appointed to the International Board of Trustees. The organization now helps to coordinate and advise Room 13 start-ups in North America. Light Bringer Project was founded in 1990 with the mission of “building communities through the power of the arts.” The organization has grown to be a producer of major public art events and innovative arts and learning programs for underserved public school youth.
