Health department warns of high bacteria levels for 2 LA beaches

Unhealthy bacteria levels prompted Los Angeles County health officials Tuesday to warn the public to avoid contact with ocean water at beaches in Marina del Rey and San Pedro.

The Department of Public Health’s beach area warnings were for the entire swim areas of Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro and Mothers Beach in Marina Del Rey.

“These warnings have been issued due to bacterial levels exceeding health standards when last tested,” according to a statement by health officials that did not specify when the testing was done.

“Some ocean water quality testing results are not yet available following the rain advisory,” according to the county. Significant rainfall often leads to higher bacteria levels as runoff from LA-area storm drains, creeks and other waterways flows into the Pacific.

Residents and visitors to the region can access recorded information on beach conditions is via the county’s 24-hour beach closure hotline, 800-525-5662.

A map of beach locations affected by bacteria warnings and additional information is available at PublicHealth.LACounty.gov/Beach/.
