The EastSide Food Festival is Back with an Impressive Lineup

You guuuyyyyyssss—it’s back. The 2nd annual EastSide Food Festival returns this month and is packing a pretty notable roster of local culinary gems.

The festival will take place on Sunday, October 18th, at Mack Sennett Studios. But beyond the generous Instagram photo opps, the EastSide Food Festival emphasizes local sustainability by featuring locally owned and operated businesses. They welcome a diverse array of vendors from some of the city’s best eateries and celebrity chefs, to distinguished caterers and local brands.

EastSide will also incorporate Q&A panels, celebrity chef demonstrations, giveaways, art, and live music from KCRW’s Travis Holcombe, Ana Calderon, Turbotito (Poolside), and Jason Stewart of Them Jeans.

The Food Fest dips the culinary richness of East LA into a melting pot of local culture, creating an entrée more than worth the ticket price. Yes, we most certainly fon-due.

What’s more, the EastSide Food Festival has joined forces local non-profit organization called PATH, a network of agencies committed to ending homelessness. The local branch builds housing and offer supportive services to individuals, families, and communities in Silver Lake and surrounding East Side areas of Los Angeles. Attending or being involved with the event will contribute to their donation to the cause, furthering the positive vibrations of LA’s latest annual foodie tradition.

After all, eating is the ultimate common ground for cultural cross-pollination. So we’re ready, armed with forks and knives, and patiently waiting for the 18th’s festivities.

Want a little intel? Here’s what we’re saving room for:

Little Beast

Little Beast is a neighborhood restaurant located in the heart of Eagle Rock. Its interior resides in a charming 1911 Craftsman bungalow, and its exterior hosts plenty of outdoor seating. They believe sharing is caring, and their menu reflects that, with small plates and large mains.

The unique daily specials can be attributed to years of culinary training within a family. Deborah Schwartz-Lowenthal and Chef Sean Lowenthal, Wife and husband, were determined to open a restaurant that has a more intimate, comfortable vibe. Following this theme, their menu offers “progressive American comfort food.”

You HAVE to try: The chipotle hummus, bread pudding, and for the daring pallets- duck liver mousse.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams

It’s no secret we Stan for Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream. Here’s the scoop: In 1995, Jeni was working at a bakery to support herself as an art student and aspiring perfumer in Columbus, Ohio. Her inventive mind led her to one experiment with ice cream, infusing one ingredient after another, adding top, middle and base notes into each flavor. These concoctions were as fatefully synchronized as her passions—“art, pastry, and perfume”—colliding in perfect harmony.

Now, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams are served in a bright, pristine shop on Hillhurst Avenue in Los Feliz. Each flavor has a uniquely smooth texture, as they are all made in a unique process developed by the alchemist herself. Up running rather quickly after their listeria scare, Jeni’s is back with all sorts of street cred.

You HAVE to try: The brown butter almond brittle. Say that 10 times.

B.S. Taqueria

Tucked between Niehule Salon and Soi 7 on 7th, B.S. Taqueria (short for “Broken Spanish”) is the neighborhood’s latest gem. Formerly Mo-Chica, the taqueria fuses traditional Mexican sensibilities with a casual Chicano vibe. Ray Garcia, the man behind the approachable concept, has a penchant for market-fresh ingredients. The new spot is colorful and bright, with wooden accents and vivid hues throughout—a far cry from its dimly lit predecessor.

You HAVE to try: The lemon-pepper chicken chicharrones. And the carne asada anythings. And the hoja santa to drink. And the churros for dessert. Taco bout a full-course meal!
