The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) invites all local students and families to attend the 2015 College Fair & Career Pathways Showcase Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Pasadena Convention Center. More than 100 public and private colleges, universities and trade schools will be represented at the showcase, which is free and open to the public.

“Planning for life after high school begins early and we hope elementary, middle and high school students and their families attend,” said Marisa Sarian, Ph.D., PUSD’s Director of College and Career Pathways and organizer of the annual event. “It is an opportunity for students and their families to get informed about the educational and extracurricular opportunities offered by post-secondary institutions, and begin developing plans for the future.”

The showcase will include informative seminars about programs of study, college admission requirements and financial aid. Topics include “SAT versus ACT,” “Five Keys to Writing an Awesome Personal Statement,” and “College Sports Recruiting 101.” PUSD high school pathway teachers and students will also be there to share achievements and experiences in the district’s academies.

Information about PUSD’s dual enrollment program with Pasadena City College that allows students to graduate with a high school diploma and an Associate of Arts degree will also be available.

PUSD’s College and Career Pathway Academies connect academics to real-world applications by integrating challenging instruction with a demanding project-based technical curriculum. Students explore the workplace, build experience and develop mentoring relationships with members of Pasadena-area Business Advisory Councils.

PUSD currently offers 10 high school academies at five campuses: the Academy for Creative Industries; the App Academy (mobile, web and game development); Arts, Entertainment and Media; Business & Entrepreneurship; Career Exploration & Options; Creative Arts, Media & Design; Culinary Arts & Hospitality; Engineering & Environmental Science; Health Careers; and Law & Public Service. Students apply to academies during the district’s annual open enrollment beginning in January.
