Frostig Center Trains Pasadena-Area Teachers in Best Strategies for Common Core

Fifty Pasadena area teachers spent two days of their summer vacation at The Frostig Center learning new strategies for implementing the Common Core curriculum.

Teachers from Pasadena Unified, Duarte Unified, Bethany Christian-Sierra Madre, and St. James/Holy Redeemer-La Crescenta attended the training program.

The Common Core State Standards, adopted in 2010, are a continuing challenge for teachers, particularly as they apply to struggling learners. The curriculum demands greater academic rigor from students and new classroom practices and strategies from teachers

Frostig’s Consultation & Education Department conducted a training program for elementary school teachers on July 27-28 and one for middle and high school teachers on Aug. 3-4. The training focused on key literacy practices, such as close reading and annotating, building academic vocabulary and creating text dependent questions. Teachers worked in small groups to share and learn strategies specific to their grade level or subject matter.

“Several teachers have told me that the Frostig training has been invaluable because of its focus on the struggling learner, an area that is not often addressed through general training,” said Helen Hill, director of the Curriculum, Instruction, & Professional Development at Pasadena Unified. “The training provided them tools to identify potential struggles, and more importantly, align them with possible solutions.”

The largest teacher contingent was from Pasadena Unified. The Frostig Center has forged a close relationship with PUSD in recent years. The Consultation & Education Dept. Has worked extensively with faculty at Blair High and Middle School and with early childhood educators in the district’s pre-schools.

Dr. Roberta J. Goldberg, director of the Consultation & Education Department, said her team introduced teachers to research-based strategies that are used at Frostig School, which services students in grades 1-12 who have diagnosed learning differences. “We are delighted to share these strategies with others because our goal is the same: success for all students,” Dr. Goldberg said.

The Common Core training program was funded in part by a grant from The Green Foundation.

The Frostig Center is a non-profit organization in Pasadena that strives to improve the lives of children with learning disabilities through an integrated program of research, professional development and community outreach, and Frostig School. The Consultation & Education Department has provided professional development to public, private and parochial school teachers for more than 30 years. Frostig School offers a full range of academic and support services for children with learning disabilities (such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia and auditory processing disorders), high-functioning autism and ADHD.
