Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s 34th Annual Memorial Torch Relay Run passed through Irwindale Friday morning and paid tribute to Deputy David March who was gunned down 9 years ago during a traffic stop.
On hand with a brief statement at the site where Deputy March was killed was his widow, Teri. She thanked all who participated and helped capture his killer. Teri March said “David had a crush on me for a while before we got married. – I hope you all come next year too…it will be the 10th anniversary – Next year I’ll run with you” she added.
The memorial torch relay run was established in 1976 to honor the memory of those brave, dedicated individuals in Los Angeles County who have sacrificed their lives in the performance of their duties.
This year’s memorial torch relay run also honors the following officers:
Deputy Charlene Rottler, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, who died on January 3, 2010, as a result of injuries she sustained during an on-duty traffic accident in 1972, when a drunk driver collided into her patrol car.
Officer Philip Ortiz, California Highway Patrol, who tragically died on June 22, 2010, when he was struck by a reckless vehicle speeding on the shoulder of the freeway while conducting a traffic stop on June 9, 2010.
