The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will start selling tickets Tuesday ahead of a scheduled Sept. 22 opening in Exposition Park.
Co-founded by filmmaker George Lucas and business executive Mellody Hobson, museum exhibits explore storytelling through visual art from prehistoric cave paintings to modern-day screen art.
Ticket sales will start at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 21 for visits between Sept. 22 and Feb. 28. Admission costs $25 for adults and $21 for seniors 65 and older, while children 17 and younger get in free, according to the museum. Admission is also free for active-duty military personnel, personal aides or attendants who accompany visitors and museum visitors with EBT cards.
Information about student, group and corporate ticket sales will be announced later, museum officials said.
“From the very beginning, George Lucas and Mellody Hobson envisioned a museum where everyone feels welcome and sees it as their own,” Lucas Museum CEO Tracey Bates said in a July 9 statement. “Storytelling has the power to bring people together and create a sense of community.”
The museum announced free admission for residents in the 90037 ZIP code in and around Exposition Park through its LM37 pass program. Pass holders can book free admission for themselves and one guest, with registration expected to begin next month.
The museum will also host a community preview day Sept. 13 to provide local residents, community organizations, business owners and civic leaders a chance to tour the art institution before its public opening.
Community organizations, local government officials and registered pass holders will distribute tickets for the preview event, museum officials said.
The museum is a 300,000-square-foot structure designed by architect Ma Yansong along with an 11-acre park by landscape architect Mia Lehrer and Studio-MLA.
The Lucas Museum’s opening will feature more than 1,200 works of art shown in about 100,000 square feet of gallery space, officials said.
One of the opening exhibitions is “Star Wars in Motion,” which features props, costumes and vehicle designs from the first six films, including Luke Skywalker’s landspeeder and the first physical build of General Grievous’ Wheel Bike.
Other galleries will explore comic and graphic storytelling through works by artists including Jack Kirby and Alison Bechdel, Japanese manga and anime, illustrations in children’s books and images from film and popular culture, according to the museum.
Works by artists and illustrators include Thomas Hart Benton, Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth and Frank Frazetta. Photography by Dorothea Lange and Gordon Parks and large-scale mural works by artists including Diego Rivera are also featured.
