A man killed while riding an all-terrain vehicle in the San Gabriel River channel in Long Beach was publicly identified Monday.

Erik Proglio was 36 years old and a Long Beach resident, according to the coroner’s office.

The crash was reported just before 7 p.m. Saturday in the flood control channel just north of Wardlow Road, Long Beach police Lt. Shaleana Benson told City News Service.

The rider now identified as Proglio was pronounced dead at the scene, Long Beach firefighter Brian Fisk said.

Witnesses told police the man was riding the quad at a high speed before he was fatally injured, Benson said. It was not clear whether he fell off the vehicle or if it rolled over on him, she said.
