On Monday, Aug. 14, 2017, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office formally charged the following two suspects responsible for the shooting death of victim Sergio Luevanos (38-year-old male, Pasadena resident) on July 24, 2017:

Suspect Armando R. Hernandez, 18-year-old male and Pasadena resident, was charged with one count of murder in the first degree, with an enhancement of committing the act for the benefit of or in association with a criminal street gang. Bail is set at $3,040,000.

Suspect Luis E. Figueroa, 19-year-old male and Pasadena resident, was charged with one count of murder in the first degree, with an enhancement of committing the act for the benefit of or in association with a criminal street gang. Bail is set at $3,065,000.

The circumstances behind the murder involved Pasadena Police patrol personnel responding to the 400 block of N. Marengo Avenue on July 24, 2017 at approximately 11:36 p.m., regarding 9-1-1 calls of shots heard and a male heard yelling. Officers arrived and found a single gunshot victim, later identified as victim Luevanos. Pasadena Fire Department paramedics arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

For the past two weeks, Pasadena Police Homicide Detectives relentlessly pursued and exhausted possible investigative leads. Based on the investigative information cultivated, the suspects in this case were identified.

On Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017, search warrants were served at various locations in Pasadena yielding the arrests of suspects Hernandez and Figueroa, and the collection of items of evidentiary value. The investigation revealed that although the incident was isolated between the parties involved, this was fueled by rival gang ties.

“Our team of dedicated and professional Criminal Investigators relentlessly pursued leads, resulting in the identification and apprehension of two murder suspects. Although the criminal filing is only the beginning of the judicial process, we hope their arrest is the start of a healing process for the family and friends of victim Luevanos,” stated Police Chief Phillip L. Sanchez.
