At about 1:15 p.m., Pasadena Police personnel noticed a suspicious package placed near the Walnut Street entrance to the police department. PPD personnel could not locate the owner so they initiated the department’s suspicious package protocols. Officers noticed a threating message on the package and notified the LASD Bomb Squad. Once on scene and following their initial examination of the package, LASD bomb technicians expressed concerns. The package was subsequently mitigated by the bomb techs. The PFD Arson Investigator and PPD officers examined the remains of the package. They quickly identified a person of interest (Daniel A. Aguilar, Pasadena resident). Aguilar was located a few hours later and he admitted to placing the suspicious package at the police department. He was arrested without incident. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed several felony charges against Aguilar. FPD Captain T. Sorensen is the lead investigator.

At about 3:15 p.m., Pasadena Police officers assisted the Pasadena Fire Department on a call at Villa Parke regarding a large tree branch that had fallen. Park-goers were nearby when the branch fell, however, no one was injured.

At about 1:14 p.m., Pasadena Police officers investigated a strong arm robbery in the 1000 block of East Mountain Street. On arrival, officers talked with the victim who said he exited the bathroom at McDonald Park, when he was approached by the suspect (male adult, 22 years). Without warning, the suspect assaulted the victim; striking him about the face and body with his fists. The suspect then stole the victim cell phone. Several nearby good Samaritans witnessed the incident and ran to assist the victim, which caused the suspect to flee the area. The suspect was located a short time later at Washington Park and arrested without incident. He (the suspect) was later booked for robbery at the Pasadena jail. The victim was treated at a local hospital for his injuries.

At about 6:02 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the Main Pasadena Library, 200 East Walnut Street, regarding an assault suspect in custody. On arrival, officers observed the suspect (male adult, 18 years) being detained by Library Security agents. PPD officers took custody of the suspect and learned that he attempted to assault the security agents with a large knife. As the suspect was being detained by the agents, he said he had “planted a bomb” in the library. Officers conducted a preliminary search and did not locate any suspicious packages or explosive devices; however, out an abundance of caution, a Pasadena Police canine, trained in explosive detection, was called. The K9 handler and her partner checked the library but did not locate any explosive device. The suspect was transported to the Pasadena jail and booked for Assault with a Deadly weapon (large knife).

At about 7:23 p.m., Pasadena Police officers attempted to stop a motorist for a minor traffic violation near Boylston Street and Lake Avenue. The driver failed to yield to the officers and attempted to elude them. The suspect driver then rammed a nearby vehicle and subsequently fleeing on foot. Officers contained the area and searched for suspect. During the investigation, officers located a handgun possibly belonging to the suspect. Despite the extensive search, the officers did not locate the suspect. His car was impounded and the firearm booked as evidence. Our investigation is ongoing.
