The Arcadia High School Cross Country team is headed to Mammoth Mountain for an intense week of high altitude training.
The girls and boys teams are trained and coached separately. The girls team, led by Ray Mynster, is leaving on Sunday, August 9. The boys, led by Jim O’Brien, leave on Friday, August 7.
The Mammoth High-Altitude Training Camp consists of morning and evening runs that traverse the mountainous terrain around Mammoth Lakes, CA. Days are spend with team bonding activities such as kayaking, watching movies, and even horseback riding.
Both teams have been successful in recent years in the Pacific League. The boys cross country team was undefeated in their 2008 season. The girls finished in a stellar second place, and broke their previous record by four minutes.
The teams host an annual Arcadia Invitational in October at the Arcadia County Park.
Typical cross country races are 3 miles or 5 kilometers in length, and can be ran on all types of surfaces including sand, grass, and pavement. Some courses consist of hills, while others are flat.
