As a measure to help Angelenos get around the city safely during the holidays, Metro announced Tuesday that people can ride trains and buses for free on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
Fares will not be collected between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. Friday night and again on Dec. 31.
During that period, fare gates at stations will be unlatched and fare boxes and validators will not deduct fares when people use their TAP cards.
Between Dec. 24 and Jan. 2, Metro will also offer free rides on its Bike Share program. People can redeem a 30-minute free ride by selecting “1- Ride” at any Metro Bike Share kiosk, online or in the Metro Bike Share app. Multiple free rides are available per day using promo code 010122. A credit or debit card is still required, and rides longer than 30 minutes will cost $1.75 for each additional 30 minutes.
Metro will not have overnight or enhanced rail service on New Year’s Eve. On Christmas Day and on Jan. 1, Metro will run on a Sunday/holiday service schedule. Capacity will be added on the L (Gold) Line on Jan. 1 for people heading to the Tournament of Roses or the Rose Bowl game.
Metro will also provide shuttle service on Jan. 1 from Sierra Madre Villa Station to the post-parade viewing area from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Jan. 2, shuttle service will be provided from the station to the post-parade viewing area at Victory Park between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Metro bus fares are already waived as a measure during the COVID-19 pandemic, but bus fare collection is set to resume on Jan. 10.
