Shootings dominate Arcadia, Monrovia news Labor Day weekend
This Labor Day weekend was anything but relaxing in Arcadia. On Saturday morning, a shooting on the freeway near Baldwin Avenue left a mother of three dead and an 8-hour traffic nightmare for motorists on the 210 Freeway.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers and Arcadia fire and police responded to the call of a solo vehicle traffic collision near the Baldwin Avenue exit at around 9:06 a.m. They reportedly found a Mercedes with a deceased woman, shot at least one time.
Arriving officers determined that a car-to-car shooting, officer Vince Ramirez of the CHP said, according to a report from KTLA.
The incident prompted one of the longest shutdowns of the 210 Freeway in Arcadia this year.
The CHP declared a Sig-Alert at the crash site shortly after, adding that lanes would remain shut down for at least eight hours. All lanes were reopened by 6:30 p.m.
The circumstances that led to the shooting were unclear, a spokesperson for CHP said. No suspect was in custody and the investigation was ongoing, the spokesperson said.
The woman killed, Betty Hernandez, 36, was the mother of three children who live in Monrovia, according to a GoFundMe page set up for the family.
There’s little information investigators have to go on and the hunt for the suspect(s) continues.
The following day, in what appeared to be a murder-suicide, two people were found dead in
the 600 block of West Huntington Drive. The incident was reported at about 11:15 a.m.
Both victims were in their 50s and pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have been withheld pending notification of next of kin.
