In conjunction with A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN at The Pasadena Playhouse celebrates the anniversary of Janis Joplin’s historic performance at Woodstock on August 16, 1969. Select members of the cast from of A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN performed a 20 minute outdoor Woodstock concert, singing songs from various sets performed at the Woodstock Festival from August 15-17, 1969. Bands who played the seminal music festival include Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Band, Janis Joplin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jefferson Airplane, Joan Baez, Santana, Joe Cocker, and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.
– Janis Joplin performed, “Piece of your Heart” for the first time at Woodstock in 1969. She was paid $7,500 to perform her set, which was 2am-3am on the morning of Saturday, August 16, 1969.
– An estimated 400,000 people attended the Woodstock Music and Arts Festival.
– Jimi Hendrix played what many consider to be the festival highlight, his version of “The Star Spangled Banner,” on Monday, August 18, when only about 35,000 people—a small fraction of the total Woodstock audience—remained on the field.
Woodstock Weekend festivities included a “Woodstock-themed” costume contest (the winner will took home a $100 gift certificate to redwhite+bluezz), the Lobsta Truck and The Grilled Cheese Truck, and Made For Pearl, a pop-up store featuring a Janis Joplin-inspired Fashion Line created by Joplin’s niece, Malyn Joplin. A limited number of $24 rush tickets will be available for performances Friday, August 14 – Sunday, August 16, when the Box Office opens. Tickets will be in the Rear Mezzanine. In the spirit of Woodstock, redwhite+bluezz, will also be offering a special drinks/appetizer deal for $19.69.
A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN is a musical journey celebrating Janis and her biggest musical influences – trailblazers like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith, who inspired one of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s greatest legends. Like a comet that burns far too brightly to last, Janis Joplin exploded onto the music scene in 1967 and, almost overnight, became the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The unmistakable voice filled with raw emotion and tinged with Southern Comfort made her a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock. Audiences will enjoy Joplin’s favorites, including “Summertime,” “Piece of My Heart,” “Cry Baby,” and “Me and Bobby McGee,” among others.
