On Aug. 16 at about 9:35 p.m., the Pasadena Police Department’s Communication Center received a 9-1-1 call from a citizen reporting that a male subject was lying on the ground in a parking lot in the 500 block of South Fair Oaks Avenue. Pasadena police officers and fire paramedics responded quickly, and fire paramedics provided immediate medical aid to the unconscious victim. Unfortunately, the victim did not survive and was pronounced deceased at 10:11 p.m. Patrol officers contained the area for investigation and Pasadena police detectives responded.

The initial investigation revealed that the victim, 64-year-old Hispanic male, was engaged in an altercation with another male prior to falling to the ground. The other party, suspect Manuel Castillo, a 39-year-old Hispanic male and Pasadena transient, had fled the scene, but was located by patrol officers in the 400 block of South Arroyo Parkway. He was arrested for homicide and booked at the Pasadena Jail on a $1 million bail. Castillo was later transported to Los Angeles Sheriff’s County Jail due to a medical issue.

The Los Angeles County Coroner reported that the victim’s cause of death is undetermined and his name is being held until his family notified.

Anyone with information regarding this assault is asked to contact the Pasadena Police Department at (626) 744-4241 or Detective Bundy at (626) 744-4511. Persons may also report information anonymously at www.lacrimestoppers.com (insert key word Pasadena).
