The public’s help is needed to send at least 300 children to school with new backpacks and classroom supplies as part of the City’s 28th Annual Michael Bryant Free Haircut and Back-to-School Event on Sunday, Aug. 14.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Robinson Park Recreation Center, 1081 N. Fair Oaks Ave.
This popular event helps children start off the school year right – with a backpack filled with needed supplies to help them achieve academic success along with a stylish new haircut to match!
As part of this partnership, city staff has been reaching out to various organizations to raise enough donations to provide 300 backpacks filled with essential school supplies for local Pasadena Unified School District children.
The “Buy One, Give One” campaign, however, needs help to reach the 300 backpack goal, said Horace Wormely, human services and recreation department director. So far, the campaign only has enough donations for about 100 backpacks, he said.
The event is primarily for children attending kindergarten through the sixth grade and is sponsored by the city’s human services and recreation department, in partnership with the online school supply company Sydney Paige Inc. ® (www.SydneyPaigeInc.com).
To purchase and donate a backpack, go to www.SydneyPaigeInc.com/PasadenaBackpacks. For every backpack purchased, the company will donate another one. For direct donations or for more information about the program, call the department at (626) 744-4386 or go online to www.cityofpasadena.net/HumanServices.
Parents interested in having their children receive free haircuts and a backpack with school supplies must first pre-register by calling Robinson Park at (626) 744-7330 or via email to Jane Whitmore at jwhitmore@cityofpasadena.net.
