A single-engine plane crashed Thursday just south of the Santa Monica Pier.

The conditions of the two people aboard the Cessna 150 were not immediately known. They needed to be freed from the wreckage, according to Los Angeles County Lifeguards.

The aircraft crash occurred in the 1800 block of Santa Monica Beach, the Santa Monica Fire Department reported.

The plane flipped over after landing about 3:15 p.m., according to FAA spokesman Ian Gregor.

“The pilot reported engine issues after departing from Santa Monica Airport,” said Gregor, adding that the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
