Couple was going through contentious divorce proceedings

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) officials have identified the people involved in the Wednesday morning murder-suicide on Sunset Boulevard in Arcadia.

Coroner’s officials identified the couple as Cherry Liu and Mel Liu, 50 and 49-years-old respectively.

According to LASD detective Derrick Alfred, the couple was in a contentious two-year divorce battle that Cherry Liu initiated in 2016. The couple has one boy, 14-years-old who played in Arcadia Little League.

According to Lt. Alfred, Mel Liu left a letter for his son trying to explain the fatal steps he took Wednesday morning.

The boy is now staying with immediate relatives, according to authorities.

Cherry Liu was well known in Arcadia and Sierra Madre. She had worked for years at the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce and more recently as an employee with Sierra Madre Senior Services caring for the seniors of that city.

News of Liu’s murder has shocked the community to which she devoted so much of her time.

Here’s a summation of the events which took place Wednesday:

Approximately at 8:15 a.m. last Wednesday morning, the Arcadia Police Department received a 9-1-1 call regarding gun shots fired and a “person down” at an apartment complex on the 800 block of Sunset Boulevard in Arcadia.

According to Lt. Alfred, first responders found two gunshot victims in the alleyway near the parking area on the south side of the of the Sunset apartment complex at 816 Sunset Blvd. early Wednesday morning.

One woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the second victim was rushed to the hospital where he later died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Alfred said there were multiple gun shots and that the LASD believes a male in his 40s shot and killed the woman, also in her 40s, and then turned the gun on himself.
