Field Elementary School wins Los Angeles County Math Field Day contest

Dina G. Pérez Named a Los Angeles County Preschool Teacher of the Year

Students and Staff from the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) have recently been recognized as top performers in Los Angeles County.

Eugene Field Elementary School students Liam Chia, Aaron Du, Justin Hong and Isabelle Wang were the overall winners for fourth grade in the 2015 Los Angeles County Office of Education’s (LACOE) Math Field Day competition. In addition to winning the overall fourth grade competition, the students also won a gold medal in the problem-solving category. Other PUSD schools also participated in the event with students from Sierra Madre Elementary School and Sierra Madre Middle School receiving medals.

LACOE’s Math Field Day is designed as an enrichment activity to promote mathematical reasoning, teamwork and a balanced mathematics curriculum for all students in upper elementary and middle school. Participation allows students to demonstrate their math knowledge through competition in the following elements: computational and procedural skill, conceptual understanding and problem-solving. It is open to four person teams from schools in Los Angeles County.

Los Angeles Universal Preschool (LAUP) has announced this year’s Preschool Teacher of the Year recipients with Dina G. Pérez, a preschool teacher at PUSD’s Burbank Early Learning Center, receiving the prestigious honor. The countywide preschool teacher recognition acknowledges the quality, creativity and hard work of those who teach children during a time when, according to researchers, rapid brain development can be leveraged toward long-term academic achievement. Winners hail from each of Los Angeles County’s five supervisorial districts and have gone “above and beyond” to provide excellent learning environments and classroom experiences for preschool children. For the selection process, LAUP uses an external committee comprised of county officials and early education experts.

“Teaching was a natural instinct,” said Pérez. “Working with children has been a rewarding experience, and seeing the results has fueled my passion.”

The recipients will be recognized at the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration with a luncheon and awards ceremony hosted by LAUP and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in late May. All of the award winners will also receive an official LA County Proclamation from the Supervisors to commemorate their work and accomplishments.
