Fisher Park, located at the corner of Almond and California Avenues in Monrovia, is set to unveil a brand new playground

Julian Fisher, one of seven Monrovia parks, is named after Julian D. Fisher, Monrovia’s first African-American police officer. The 1.8 acre park features a gazebo, basketball courts, and a large play area. However, in 2011, the aging and vandalized playground equipment was removed from the park.

In 2013, the county awarded a $250,000 grant to the City of Monrovia to replace the playground equipment as part of the Safe Neighborhoods Parks Propositions of 1992 and 1996, commonly referred to as Proposition A/Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District.

In a joint effort, the Monrovia City Council, Monrovia Community Services Commission and members of the Fisher family have been collaborating on ideas for the new playground; visiting playgrounds throughout Southern California to find the best fit for the beloved park nestled between established neighborhoods. The contract was ultimately awarded to Playworld Stations.

The new playground, designed for children of all ages and abilities, will feature a slide with rollers to add zing, a climbing dome for kids of all ages, and a reinforced swing set. Construction of the new playground began in May 2014. The official opening will be held at 10AM August 2.
