As a disgustingly proud British expat, I drive an MG, drink British ales and still speak the King’s English as much as possible. I do tend to wax nostalgic about the wonderful British Isles, but then, don’t we all?
A colleague of mine, who is particularly well versed on MG,s AND beers , recently informed me of some new brews coming from the fine folks who brew ‘old speckled hen’. I gave them a ‘bell’…actually I emailed them for some of the particulars of these new brews.
A few days later I received a charming email from a young woman named Harriet ( terribly British name, yes?) and she forward me some interesting information about not only the ales but also the MG factory, which sadly ceased production of the greatest sports car ever in 1980.
The UK’s leading premium ale brand “Old Speckled Hen” first began tantalizing taste buds back in 1979 according to their press release.
Starting life as a commemorative beer to mark the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory in Abingdon, this smooth, full-bodied brew is now recognised as a firm favourite of discerning drinkers everywhere.
“Old Speckled Hen” took its distinctive name from an old canvas-covered MG used by employees at the factory as a run-around.
Often parked outside the factory paint shop and consequently splattered with flecks of paint, this curious little car was a popular sight among locals who affectionately dubbed it the ‘Owld Speckled Un’.
Years later this unique and much-loved motor “provided perfect inspiration for the name of the new beer and a national treasure was born!”
The hen family has now spread its wings to include “Old Golden Hen”, at 4.1% ABV, a refreshing golden beer which has already proved very popular and vintage ale, “Old Crafty Hen” at 6.5% ABV.
Celebrating 50 years of MG’s classic MGB model “Old Speckled Hen” will be launching a competition this September that gives customers the chance to win one of the iconic cars for themselves. This fantastic MGB first prize will be complemented by 1000 runners up prizes of limited edition Corgi collectors’ die-cast models.
Promoted in pubs as well as in supermarkets and off licences, customers can enter via twitter or on the “Old Speckled Hen” website (www.oldspeckledhen.co.uk), with the competition winner announced in November.
Uniquely wrapped in “Old Speckled Hen” livery the branded MGB will be showcased at a series of Great British events throughout the summer, starting with MGLive! at Silverstone race circuit on June 23 and 24 – the world’s biggest event for MG owners, organised by the MG Car Club. Appearances at Goodwood Festival of Speed (28 June – 1 July) and the famous Goodwood Revival (14-16 September) will follow.
The “Old Speckled Hen” family will be available to sample at the events, with the chance to purchase special commemorative merchandise and photo opportunities with the unique branded MGB.
“Old Speckled Hen’s” rich amber colour and superb fruity aromas are complemented by a delicious blend of malty tastes that give a balanced sweetness, followed by a refreshingly dry finish.
Available in 500ml or 355ml bottles and 500ml cans at 5.2% ABV, “Old Speckled Hen” is also available in cask and smooth in keg at 4.5% ABV.
