Critics Choice Association to present inaugural Latino cinema celebration

Rita Moreno and Lin-Manuel Miranda will be among the honorees Thursday at the Critics Choice Association’s inaugural Celebration of Latino Cinema, honoring those who made “significant contributions to film in 2021.”

Moreno — an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award-winning actress — will receive an Icon Award during the event, while songwriter, actor and director Miranda will receive a Visionary Award.

Also being honored during the ceremony will be Demian Bichir, one of only four Latino actors to be nominated for a best-actor Oscar. Bichir will receive a Career Achievement Award, which will also honor the 10th anniversary of his Oscar-nominated role in the film “A Better Life.”

“King Richard” director Reinaldo Marcus Green will receive the Director Award, with “King Richard” actress Aunjanue Ellis presenting the honor. Clifton Collins Jr. will receive the Actor Award for his work in the film “Jockey,” with actor Don Cheadle presenting. Olga Merediz will receive the Actress Award for her work in the film adaptation of “In the Heights,” reprising a role she originated on stage. Jon M. Chu will present Merediz’s award.

Eugenio Derbez will receive the Supporting Actor Award for his work in “CODA,” while the creative team behind Netflix’s “Vivo” — Gloria Estefan, Alex Lacamoire, Juan de Marcos, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Ynairaly Simo — will receive the Film Music Award.

Filmmaker Tatiana Huezo will receive the International Film Award for her film “Prayers for the Stolen.” Actor/director/writer Natalie Morales will receive a Special Honoree Award, recognizing her recent films “Plan B” and “Language Lessons.”

A portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated to LA Collab, which works to bolster Latino access, visibility and representation in the entertainment industry.
