Firefighters stop forward progress of 35-acre Duarte brush fire

Los Angeles County firefighters were working this morning to surround a 35-acre brush fire in Duarte with a line of cleared vegetation after stopping its progress.

The fire was 17% contained at 10 p.m. Sunday and no structures were threatened, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Michael Pittman. The fire’s progress was stopped at 9:30 p.m.

The fire was first reported at 4:13 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Brookridge and Mel Canyon roads, Pittman said.

The Fish Canyon/Riverbed portion of the fire burned about 5 acres and is now out, the department reported.

The fire spread to Opal Canyon and that was where firefighters continued to focus their efforts, officials said.

The blaze forced the evacuation of stables in Azusa.

No injuries were reported, Pittman said.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation, he said.
