While there is popular belief that cats don’t like water, the Wildcats of Monrovia boys’ water polo prepare for one of the most promising seasons in recent years.

Under the tutelage of Kris Williams, who’s entering his second year as head coach after coaching junior varsity for three years, Monrovia looks to make a bigger splash than they ever have before.

“The goal is to do better than last year,” Williams said. “Every year just do something better, something that no one was expecting, and just always trying to progress.”

Last season, the Wildcats performed quite well as they battled tough every game but had some trouble bringing home the wins. However, Monrovia was able to defeat Rio Hondo League rivals La Canada, one of the areas most dominant teams who the Wildcats haven’t beaten in quite some time.

This year, Williams said one of the team’s strengths is their youth, as most of it’s comprised of sophomores and juniors with a couple seniors, giving them plenty of time to develop a strong chemistry.

Williams has been keeping in close contact with his players as some of them have been training with him while others have been training through the local San Gabriel Polo Club.

Monrovia will open its 14-game, regular-season slate with a home fixture against St. Francis on Aug. 21.
