Council Member Gloria Crudgington joined city staff in a small dedication and photo-op event to celebrate the city’s first resident sidewalk poetry art program installation on June 26. Resident Kathee Bautista penned the poem that has been inscribed on the sidewalk at 238 W. Palm Ave., which reads:
“The
Mountains
Welcome me home
Calling me fondly from afar
Reminding me of the beauty
In my own backyard.”
During the past year, the city’s Art in Public Places Committee and the city council worked to develop a sidewalk poetry program, and as part of that initiative, the city coordinated a process for residents to submit different poetry ideas for consideration. The program (which is tentatively being called, “Footnotes”) seeks to have resident inspired poems imprinted onto sidewalks throughout the city, and as the photos illustrate, the overall Footnotes program looks like it will certainly be a terrific initiative that adds to the charm of Monrovia.
