Nearly a month after a Pasadena police officer shot and killed Anthony McClain on Aug. 15, the Pasadena Police Department has identified the officer who shot McClain.

The officer involved in the incident is Officer Edwin Dumaguindin, according to a press release issued by the department Thursday. He has been a police officer with the Pasadena Police Department for the past two years. At the time of the incident, Dumaguindin was not, nor has he ever been, assigned to the Police Department’s Special Enforcement Section, a now disbanded gang enforcement unit at the center of several controversies for the department.

Speculation on social media and in some media outlets had incorrectly identified another officer as having shot McClain. In its statement explaining the delay in identifying Dumaguindin, the department sites concerns for the officer’s safety. “These posts and comments were initially directed at an incorrectly identified officer and included a post that brazenly stated the officer ‘needs to die.’ All employers are expected to protect their employees from any threats of violence and is the reason Chief Perez worked to protect the officer’s identity.”

Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to call Pasadena Police at (626)- 744-4241 or you may report information anonymously by calling “Crime Stoppers” by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), use your smartphone by downloading the “P3 Tips” Mobile APP on Google play or the Apple App Store or by using the website lacrimestoppers.org.
