President Donald Trump was expected to sign an executive order Tuesday establishing a task force for the 2028 Olympics Games in Los Angeles.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt issued a statement Monday ahead of a formal announcement at a signing ceremony with athletes and Olympics officials in attendance.
“During his first term, President Trump was instrumental in securing America’s bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles,” Leavitt said. “The president considers it a great honor to oversee this global sporting spectacle in his second term. Sports is one of President Trump’s greatest passions, and his athletic expertise, combined with his unmatched hospitality experience, will make these Olympic events the most exciting and memorable in history.”
LA28 President and Chairman Casey Wasserman, who has met with Trump to discuss the Games, also issued a statement.
“On behalf of LA28, I want to express our deep appreciation to President Trump and his administration for their leadership and unwavering support as we prepare to deliver the largest and most ambitious Olympic and Paralympic Games ever hosted in the United States,” Wasserman said. “Since we secured this historic opportunity in 2017, President Trump has consistently recognized the magnitude of our responsibility in welcoming the world to Los Angeles. The creation of this task force marks an important step forward in our planning efforts and reflects our shared commitment to delivering not just the biggest, but the greatest Games the world has ever seen in the summer of 2028.”
The signing ceremony was set for Tuesday afternoon.
“We have already been meeting with federal, state and local partners to coordinate the logistics of major events like the Olympics, World Cup and upcoming Super Bowls,” Diana Crofts-Pelayo, a spokeswoman for the governor’s office, said in a statement. “We welcome the White House’s financial and logistical support for these global games that will showcase the vibrancy of California and the Los Angeles region.”
LA Deputy Mayor of Communications Zak Heidl said in a statement, “We’ve had a productive working relationship with the federal government since Los Angeles was awarded the Games in 2017 and we will continue preparing with all partners to host the best Games in history — Games that will benefit the entire nation for decades to come.”
Trump has clashed this year with Newsom, LA Mayor Karen Bass and local Democrats on issues such as aggressive federal immigration enforcement in Southern California and the response to and recovery efforts following the January wildfires.
