The City of San Bernardino Animal Services Department held a ribbon cutting on May 6 to celebrate the opening of the new Satellite Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center located at 1543 W. Eighth St.
A large crowd was on hand for the occasion and get a behind the scenes tour throughout the brand-new facility.
The 7,175 square foot facility will house up to 150 cats and 80 dogs, as well as other small animals under the department’s care, such as rabbits, and reptiles in a climate-controlled environment.
The adoption center will be open daily to the public for adoptions between noon and 4 p.m.
The building is owned by Casa Ramona Inc. and previously served as a Behavioral Health and Urgent Care facility for the County of San Bernardino.
“San Bernardino’s investment in this center is just the latest as we continue to expand and upgrade our animal services facilities,” said Mayor Helen Tran. “Later this year, we will be adding additional kennels to our main shelter on Chandler Place as we further reduce crowding among the animals under our care.”
In 2024, the City of San Bernardino expanded their operations in partnership with the neighboring cities of Colton, Fontana, Grand Terrace, Loma Linda, and Rialto to provide shelter and adoption services to residents of those cities as well.
Since bringing aboard the additional cities, the San Bernardino Animal Services Department has expanded staffing, opened 34 additional kennels, and opened a new customer service center at its main facility located at 333 Chandler Place. Additional kennel space will be opened in the Fall.
“The strides we have made in less than eighteen months demonstrate the commitment this city and our partners have for the well-being of the dogs and cats under our supervision,” added Tran.
