The Long Beach Department of Public Works will hold a community meeting to provide updates on the Colorado Lagoon Open Channel Project. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the Recreation Park Community Center (4900 E. 7th St.).

The Colorado Lagoon Open Channel Project is in the final phase of a comprehensive restoration plan to revitalize the 18-acre saltwater tidal lagoon by reestablishing a natural connection between the lagoon and Marine Stadium to enhance tidal exchange and water quality. The project will create new tidal wetlands, improve the lagoon’s ecological health and preserve recreational opportunities for the community.

The meeting will include updates on the project’s overall status, completed construction, and remaining work as the project nears completion. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the presentation. Interpretation services will be provided in Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog.

The city continues to work with the community and its local, state and federal agency partners, as well as the Port of Long Beach, to provide project updates. Previous improvements at the Lagoon have included dredging contaminated sediments, major water quality improvements, creating new subtidal, eelgrass habitat and upland habitat, public access enhancements, pedestrian bridge expansion, and improvements to the reclaimed water irrigation system. These previous improvements were implemented in 2010, 2012, and 2017.
