There’s a lot that can happen in the playoffs, especially when the winning team won the game by 47 points.
In the first round of the 2015 CIF Southern Section Division 4A Boys Basketball game, Maranatha High School convincingly booked their spot in the next round with an 80-33 win over the Milken Community Schools on Feb. 18th. The Minutemen displayed killer offense, produced highlight-reel dunks and a player coming back from injury in junior power forward Trevor Stanback.
“Ive been waiting for it for so long,” said Stanback, who came back from a season-long injury. “The fact that I can get a win on my first game back – it’s great.”
The home side started slow in the first quarter, but held the Milken Wildcats to only eight points. The Minutemen proceeded to go on a 32-0 run in the second before the Wildcats sank a layup for the first points of the quarter.
“It was a team victory for them,”said Milken head coach Mike Whiting. ““We started out trying to extend on Dorsey a little bit, then their inside game got a to us, and it just wore us out”
Maranatha’s next game is this Friday, Feb 20th. It is a neutral playoff game vs. Riverside Prep (7pm)
The third quarter brought a showcase of dunks from Maranatha’s leading scoring guard senior Tyler Dorsey, who threw one down off of a fast break. Stanback would add another one of his own shortly after.
““I didn’t think I was actually going to get it,” said the power forward. “I saw someone coming up and I said ‘I’m going to try it anyway,’ and I dunked it.”
Maranatha extended the lead to 40 early in the fourth, before the lead stretched to 50 with minutes left in the game thanks to the Minutemen’s junior varsity unit who proceeded to close out the game.
“Our goal was to stay focused and to do what we needed to do,” said Maranatha head coach Tim Tucker. “16 teams went home today, we just didn’t want to be one of them.”
