This week’s City Manager’s Update from Interim City Manager/Fire Chief Brad Dover includes a brief video explaining why the city wishes to increases the local sales tax to 10.25%, the maximum allowed by law. The current local tax rate is 9.5%. This increase would keep local taxes in the community.
As an example that the amount of money that goes out of the community does not equal the amount that returns to the community, the video explains that since 2017 Monrovians have paid more than $5 million to the county for the homeless tax, but only $30,000 has come back to the community.
This week the city has announced several community meetings regarding Measure K to allow citizens or ask questions about the issue. On Saturday, Oct. 19 there will be a MAP educational meeting about the subject at 11 a.m. at the Community Center. On Tuesday Oct. 22 there will be a general community meeting in the City Council Chambers at 7 p.m.
The Historic Preservation Commission will be reviewing the issue on Oct. 23 again in Council Chambers at 7:30 p.m.
The city made presentations to two senior clubs this week.
