PASADENA MAYOR & CITY COUNCIL URGE POSTMASTER GENERAL TO RECONSIDER CLOSURE OF MACK ROBINSON MAIL FACILITY
PASADENA, Calif.—Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard this week issued a letter to the U.S. Postmaster General in Washington, D.C., urging the U.S Postal Service to reconsider its planned closure of the Mack Robinson Processing and Distribution Center.
Mayor Bogaard’s two-page letter dated June 19 was addressed to U.S. Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe “on behalf of a unanimous City Council” following the Council’s regular meeting June 18 during which the pending closure was publicly discussed.
“I am writing to express strong opposition to consolidating Pasadena’s Mack Robinson Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC),” Mayor Bogaard said in his letter.
The Mack Robinson P&DC is tentatively scheduled to begin closing as soon as July 2 and the U.S. Postal Service’s plans call for fully closing the mail processing facility in early 2013, the Mayor noted.
The Mayor said “hundreds of postal workers” could be displaced or forced to relocate and their “livelihoods threatened” due to the closure. There could also be serious impacts to Pasadena’s local economy and to the business community, he wrote.
“The closure will place significant economic and financial hardship on Pasadena’s businesses, residents and postal employees. The local and efficient delivery of mail is central to the businesses in Pasadena that provide our jobs and fuel our economy.”
The letter concludes with Mayor Bogaard urging strongly that the Postal Service defer its decision on the Pasadena Mack Robinson P&DC, reminding the Postmaster General that the City has “no choice but to consider every means to mitigate or avoid the negative impacts of this action.”
