Baca Won’t Turn Illegal Immigrants Over to ICE

In a report Wednesday by The Los Angles Times, County Sheriff Lee Baca says he will no longer hand over illegal immigrants arrested for minor crimes to the feds.
The newspaper said that Baca overturned his position on participating in the federal Secure Communities Program.
The program calls for local law enforcement to send all arrestees’ fingerprints to ICE.. If the person is a suspected illegal immigrant, authorities can request the local agency hold the person for 48 hours until a transfer to federal custody.
Critics of the federal program say it has made immigrants apprehensive of reporting crimes or cooperating with any police officer or investigation.
