Glendale police fatally shot an allegedly knife-wielding suspect Monday, officials said.
Patrol officers responded to a report of an assault involving a knife that had just occurred around 9 p.m. in the 3700 block of Honolulu Avenue in the Montrose neighborhood.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim who had sustained injuries that appeared to be knife wounds. The 58-year-old suspect, who was a neighbor of the victim, then exited a nearby residence armed with a knife. He fled on foot when officers confronted him.
Police pursued the suspect on foot for a short distance. During the chase, “the suspect turned and advanced toward the pursuing officers while still armed with the knife,” and an officer-involved shooting occurred, according to the Glendale Police Department.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and no officers were injured, police said.
He was identified Tuesday as Oliver Haas, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.
The knife-assault victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries that appeared to be non-life-threatening.
Detectives from the GPD’s Robbery-Homicide Unit also responded and were investigating the incident, police said.
Police asked anyone with information about the fatal shooting and alleged knife attack to contact the GPD at 818-548-4840.
