DoorDash Labs is the autonomous delivery robot Dot to Riverside, officials announced Monday following an unveiling event last week.
DoorDash and the city’s Economic Development Department are exploring a possible local innovation hub, a collaboration that officials said continues to expand the leadership in innovation, automation and next-generation logistics, while building upon the city’s Green Technology Hub and commitment to sustainable growth.
“Riverside is leading the way in building a connected, innovative, and sustainable city,” Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson said in a statement. “Our partnership with DoorDash Labs reflects our vision to attract cutting-edge technology that strengthens our local economy, supports small businesses, and improves quality of life for our residents.”
The first public demonstration of Dot in Riverside was Friday at Gram’s BBQ with assistance from the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce.
The Public Works Department is developing a strategic, safety-focused plan that aims to responsibly integrate autonomous delivery robots on Riverside streets in the near future, according to the city. Planning efforts include risk mitigation, route safety and operational readiness.
Officials said this is a pace-setting collaboration in which Riverside is establishing a model for the integration of robotics and automation into local infrastructure, setting a benchmark for cities nationwide interested in next-generation technology that functions responsibly and effectively.
The autonomous delivery initiative aims to support local business owners, create jobs and invigorate small-business growth. Officials also hope the Dot program will improve access to local restaurants and consumer services, bringing tangible benefits to residents and local entrepreneurs.
“This partnership reinforces Riverside’s position as a destination for innovation and advanced technology,” City Manager Mike Futrell said in a statement. “By working with forward-thinking partners like DoorDash Labs, we’re building a more resilient local economy and helping shape the future of mobility and logistics.”
Henry Greenidge, senior legislative policy adviser for DoorDash Labs, said the company is “proud to be working with the City of Riverside to advance the future of autonomous deliveries. Together, we can help shape a smarter and more sustainable future where innovative technology like Dot can bring next-generation robotics out of the lab and into the community,” he said in a statement.
