A dog rescued after several days in the San Bernardino stormwater system was doing well in a foster home, the city announced Thursday.

On June 16, Animal Services officers responded to a report of a small white dog trapped in a storm drain, the location of which was not immediately available. Public Works personnel opened a manhole cover where the animal was thought to be, but the dog was no longer visible and appeared to have moved deeper into the underground system of water channels.

Over the next several days, the department received more calls about a dog seen and heard in a storm drain, officials said. Animal Control Field Supervisor Andrew Fisher and Officer Jasmine Torres located the imperiled pooch inside the drain and after police secured the street, Fisher and Torres were able to open the access door, then Fisher climbed down into the drain and the officers safely retrieved the dog using a net.

The small, light-colored terrier was fearful and shut down initially, according to a city statement. Animal Services staffers named her Dixie and over the ensuing days, the rescued dog “gradually began to warm up and sought affection from staff at the Satellite Adoption Center.”

On June 28, Dixie was released to a foster caregiver who had witnessed the rescue.

“We are happy to report that Dixie is doing well in foster care and will be adopted once her spay surgery is completed,” according to a city statement.

Information about other pets available for adoption is on the city’s website.
