Lindsay Charles, a senior at Westridge School in Pasadena, was selected to be the 106th Rose Queen, the Tournament of Roses announced Tuesday.

Lindsey and the seven-member Rose Court will attend events leading up to the Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl Game on Jan. 1.

Lindsey was crowned Rose Queen at a ceremonial announcement Tuesday afternoon at the Tournament House in Pasadena, the Tournament of Roses organization headquarters. Her Mikimoto crown features over 600 cultured pearls and six carats of diamonds, Tournament officials said.

Lindsey is a San Marino resident and captains the Westridge School’s track and field team. She’s also active in Food Chain LA, Green Guerrillas club, Multicultural/Multiracial Affinity and Stemology for Kids, according to the Tournament of Roses.

She speaks Mandarin fluently and likes gardening, neuroscience, hiking, journaling, drawing and collecting art. In college she plans to study environmental science or neuroscience.

Lindsey and the six other Rose Court honorees were selected from hundreds of applicants in September.

This year’s Rose Court consists of Lisette Parker, a senior at Maranatha High School; Saniyah Brunston, a senior at John Muir High School; Lara Georgian, a senior at Mayfield Senior School; Natalia Pradhan, a senior at Flintridge Preparatory School; Simone Ball, a senior at Arcadia High School; and Kate Kelly, a senior at La Cañada High School.

Rose Court applicants must identify as female, be between 17 and 21 years old, reside within the Pasadena Area Community College District and have at least a 2.0 grade-point average during the current and prior academic years, according to the Tournament of Roses. Prospective Rose Court members must be either a high school senior or a full-time student at any school or college in the Pasadena Area Community College District.

Court members each receive a $7,500 scholarship.

“For more than 100 years, the Rose Queen and Court have symbolized the heart of the cherished Rose Parade on New Year’s Day,” according to the Tournament of Roses. “The seven young ladies highlight the mosaic of backgrounds and cultures that define the Pasadena community and exemplify character, service and leadership modeled through their commitment to family, school and community.”

The group will attend dozens of community and charity events this fall and will appear on a Rose Parade float and on the field for pre-game ceremonies at the Rose Bowl Game.
