Registered voters in the city of Sierra Madre soon will receive vote-by-mail ballots for the May 9 special municipal election, the Los Angeles County Registar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office announced Monday.

Voters will decide on “The Meadows at Bailey Canyon,” a proposed housing development and new public park at the monastery property located at 700 N. Sunnyside Ave., according to Sierra Madre’s website.

The property’s owner — the Congregation of the Passion, Mater Dolorosa Community — and developer NUWI-Sierra Madre LLC want to construct a 17-acre, 42-home development, new roads and a 3-acre park, according to a document by Sierra Madre City Attorney Aleks Giragosian.

Every registered voter in the city will receive a vote-by-mail ballot. Voters can track their ballot every step of the way with free text, email or voicemail updates at https://bit.ly/3KP6oIe.

When a voter completes their special election ballot they can return it by mail, no postage required, at the Sierra Madre City Hall Ballot Drop Box, located at 232 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., or at voting centers beginning April 29.

To find the nearest voting center near you, where voters also may still opt to vote in person, visit https://bit.ly/3Gxc9r8.

The registrar’s office provides translated election materials in up to 18 different languages. Voters can request to receive their materials in their preferred language by returning the language request form on the back of the sample ballot book or by calling 800-815-2666, option 3.
