A woman died Wednesday at an apartment fire in Boyle Heights, authorities said.
Firefighters sent to the 500 block of South Clarence Street shortly after 4 a.m. extinguished the flames in about 20 minutes, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
“Despite reports received from bystanders saying all occupants were out of the unit, firefighters conducted a thorough search and unfortunately located the remains of a 68-year-old woman,” Stewart said.
“While audible smoke alarms could be heard activating in the surrounding units, it is not known at this time (if) the fire unit had functioning smoke alarms,” she added.
The woman’s name was withheld, pending notification of her relatives. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
