Officials Saturday released the name of a 40-year-old woman who was killed in a shooting in Commerce that also left a man in his 30s wounded.

The woman was identified as Rocio Cortez, who was listed as a transient, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s East Los Angeles station responded at approximately 3:43 p.m. Wednesday to a shots fired call, where they found Cortez lying on the railroad tracks behind a group of businesses in the 5600 block of Randolph Street, according to Deputy Veronica Rodriguez of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Cortez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies located the man near the location, Rodriguez said. He sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

During their investigation, investigators learned an argument had taken place between the victims and an unknown male suspect. The suspect shot the woman before shooting the man and fleeing westbound along the railroad tracks.

A third person was shot at but not struck, sheriff’s officials said.

Anyone with information about the shootings was asked to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Tipsters may also call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS or use the website www.lacrimestoppers.org.
