In response to incidents of catalytic converter thefts in the area, the City of La Cañada Flintridge, in conjunction with the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station, will host a one-day “Catalytic Converter Etching Event” on Saturday, March 26 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event is a part of a multifaceted strategy to address the uptick in catalytic converter thefts occurring across Los Angeles County.

Registered participants will have their vehicle’s catalytic converter etched with their vehicle identification number (VIN). This etching will act both as a theft deterrent and provide valuable information should it be stolen and later recovered by law enforcement personnel during subsequent investigations.

“This event will protect one of our most utilized resources – our vehicles, along with strengthening the relationship between the community residents and law enforcement.  We also hope that this effort will help deter any potential catalytic converter thieves. Hopefully, the auto manufacturing community will consider etching the VIN on the catalytic converter at the time of manufacture,” said Public Safety Commission Chair Jeff Olson.

The event is being provided at no cost, but advanced registration is required. Be sure to sign up as soon as possible, as appointments are limited. Registration will open at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2022. The event will be open to all residents of the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station service area.

To register for the event, residents and others who are eager to join may do so at eventbrite.com.

The event location is at the La Canada High School Senior Parking Lot (on Foothill Blvd before Oak Grove Drive) 4463 Oak Grove Dr. in La Cañada Flintridge. The registered owner of the vehicle must be present at the event to sign a liability form.
