An 84-year-old man was fatally struck by a car in Long Beach Thursday, police said.

A Long Beach Police Department officer witnessed a 2021 Acura ILX strike Fikre Workneh at about 6:25 a.m. at the intersection of East Ocean Boulevard and Lindero Avenue, near the Long Beach Museum of Art, according to a department statement.

Following the collision, the officer called additional resources to the scene and began performing life-saving measures on Workneh until Long Beach Fire Department paramedics arrived and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The driver of the Acura, a 48-year-old Long Beach resident, remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities, according to the LBPD.

A preliminary investigation revealed Workneh was walking across lanes of traffic outside of a crosswalk when the Acura struck him while entering the intersection on a green light. Speed, impaired driving and distracted driving were not considered to be a factor in the collision.

Anyone with information on the collision was asked to contact LBPD Collision Investigation Detail Detectives Joseph Johnson or Shawn Loughlin at 562-570-7355. Anonymous tips can be called in to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or submitted online at lacrimestoppers.org.
