A 33-year-old man walking on the Seaside (710) Freeway in Long Beach before dawn Tuesday was struck and killed by an SUV whose driver fled.

Long Beach Police Department officers were called at about 3 a.m. to the northbound Seaside Freeway in the area of the Ninth Street off-ramp on reports of a collision and found the man lying in the roadway, according to a department statement.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released pending notification of his next of kin.

A preliminary investigation revealed the man was walking along the right shoulder of the Seaside Freeway and crossed into lanes of traffic when a white SUV struck him and fled the scene, police said.

Investigators were attempting to determine whether the man was also struck by a second vehicle.

Anyone with information on the collision was asked to call LBPD Collision Investigation Detail Detective Kevin Johansen or Detective Joseph Johnson at 562-570-7355.

Anonymous tips can be called in to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or submitted online at lacrimestoppers.org.
