LA County Library reintroduces in-person storytimes, other programs

Storytime is returning to select Los Angeles County Library branch locations starting Monday as more in-person services continue to be rolled out systemwide.

Participating libraries, which reopened with limited services over the summer, are offering in-person weekly Smarty Pants Storytime school readiness programs specially designed for toddlers and preschoolers, ages 2 to 5.

Smarty Pants Storytime will be initially offered at 21 locations, expanding to 45 locations later in the month. Designed in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Office of Education, participants enjoy books, songs, rhymes and movement, building early literacy skills, basic math skills, social skills and more, according to organizers.

“LA County Library is committed to supporting early childhood literacy,” LA County Library Director Skye Patrick said. “Getting kids to enjoy reading and learning at a young age is critical to their development. We are pleased to once again offer in-person programs, both to welcome our customers back to our libraries, and to assist those who may not have access to early learning opportunities, so that their children can thrive both inside and outside of the library.”

Founded in 1912, LA County Library is one of the largest library systems in the United States, serving 3.4 million residents through its 86 libraries and 18-vehicle mobile fleet.

Beyond Smarty Pants Storytime, additional in-person events for children and adults of all ages are returning in October after being on hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Advanced registration is required for all in-person events, and attendance will be limited.

Face coverings are required for all visitors ages 2 and up.
