Nithya Raman seeks funding for ‘Encampment To Home’ program

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nithya Raman introduced a motion Tuesday to request $3.86 million to fund an “Encampment to Home” program throughout her district, which includes parts of Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Hollywood, Koreatown, Sherman Oaks, Miracle Mile, Fairfax District and more.

“This targeted and strategic funding will allow my office to begin a multi-pronged, services led outreach program aimed at housing individuals across the district that if successful, can be used as a model city-wide,” Raman said.

Raman’s program would be modeled after Councilman Mike Bonin’s program at Ocean Front Walk in Venice, which brought 191 people indoors with an offer of a pathway to permanent housing. Bonin’s office said Tuesday that of the people who have been brought indoors through that program, which concluded on July 30, 180 have been given permanent housing subsidies. Not all of them have been placed into their permanent housing accommodation yet, as the city is seeking additional landlords to accept the vouchers.

Raman’s office said the District 4 program, which would be in partnership with The People Concern, would focus on 16 high-priority locations in her district, which have as many as 150 unhoused people, many of whom are chronically homeless.

“The People Concern is looking forward to building on the success of our other Encampment to Home projects to link vulnerable neighbors in CD4 with services and housing as quickly as possible. Our multidisciplinary outreach teams will continue to build trust and use intensive engagement to empower people to make informed choices and connect them with best-fit housing that meets their needs,” said John Maceri, CEO of The People Concern.
