A photo enforcement program directed at motorists will be implemented at the beginning of October along Crenshaw Boulevard in the Crenshaw District along the future route of the Crenshaw/LAX Line, it was announced Wednesday.
The program is designed to help reducing the number of accidents, injuries and fatalities associated with red-light violations at all rail crossings involving streets and highway, according to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, also known as Metro.
“Helping ensure motorist safety and the safety of the surrounding community will be a key agency priority before, during and after the Crenshaw/LAX light rail line opens to the public,” according to a Metro statement.
The transit agency and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will activate the photo enforcement program on Oct. 1. Motorists will receive warnings for 30 days before actual citations are issued.
Metro began intermittent train testing on Crenshaw Boulevard last December.
The photo enforcement program is designated to detect motorists who make illegal left-hand turns and will operate at the following intersections along Crenshaw Boulevard:
- southbound Crenshaw to eastbound 48th Street;
- southbound Crenshaw to eastbound 52nd Street;
- northbound Crenshaw to westbound 52nd Street;
- southbound Crenshaw to eastbound 54th Street;
- northbound Crenshaw to westbound 54th Street;
- northbound Crenshaw to westbound 57th Street;
- southbound Crenshaw to eastbound 59th Street;
- northbound Crenshaw to westbound 59th Street;
- southbound Crenshaw to eastbound Slauson Avenue; and
- northbound Crenshaw to westbound Slauson Avenue.
Motorists who violate the left-hand turn traffic signal during the first 30 days of enforcement will receive a warning letter notifying them that their vehicle was photographed violating the red light at a designated rail crossing. The warning period ends Nov. 1.
Motorists who disobey traffic signals and operate vehicles in an illegal manner after Nov. 1 will begin receiving traffic citations in the mail for violations at the 10 locations. Citations average around $100 and could include additional penalties and assessments, according to Metro.
The transit agency previously implemented photo enforcement programs on its other transit lines, including the A Line (Blue), L Line (Gold), G Line (Orange), and E Line (Expo).

The Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project will bring 8 1/2 miles of new light rail extending service from Metro’s E Line (Expo) at the Expo/Crenshaw Station to Metro’s C Line (Green) at the Aviation/LAX Station.
