$47K in grants awarded by the Pasadena Literary Alliance
The Pasadena Literary Alliance awarded over $47,000 in grants, keeping with its mission of supporting literary programs.
This year’s awards bring the organization’s cumulative grant total to over $400,000, according to Katie Poole, PLA President.
The grants were awarded to the Lifetime Learning Masters Series at the Pasadena Senior Center, Writer-in-Residence program at Pasadena City College, the One City, One Story program at the Pasadena Public Library, You Are a Writer workshops at PEN America Los Angeles, and creative writing workshops for high school girls at WriteGirl.
Due to COVID-19 the Pasadena Literary Alliance transitioned to an online format, Open Book on Location, and produced 13 discussion panels featuring authors such as Michael Connelly, Barbara Kingsolver, Laurie King, Cornelia Funke, Charles Yu and more.
The Pasadena Festival of Women Authors, an annual event, was presented online in 2020 and 2021 with women authors sharing their personal journeys. Some of the authors were Madeline Miller, Laila Lalami, Kiley Reid and Alka Joshi.
The Pasadena Literary Alliance will resume in-person author discussions on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2021 with their Open Book series. The event will feature Emmy-nominated and Edgar Award-winning writer Attica Locke in conversation with Rachel Howzell Hall. The event is scheduled to be held in Pasadena’s NOOR ballroom. The PLA will host next year’s Pasadena Festival of Women Authors at the Pasadena Convention Center on March 19, 2022.
The online programs created by the PLA were available for free, but donations of $25 were suggested. The Open Book on Location series, Pasadena Festival of Women Authors and information on their upcoming event can be accessed online at pasadenaliteraryalliance.org.
